Residential Services
Residential Services provides individuals with the ability to live in an apartment or a house, generally a group living setting. Currently, our residential program has two 24-hour residential support homes; both in Powassan. There are a total of 8 people receiving residential supports from AHCL.
Residential programs offer supports in all aspects of life and that support varies for each individual. Person centered planning is a key component for life in group living to provide people with choices about how they want to spend their days, what their needs are and how staff can best support them.
Often people supported in group living require some assistance with activities of daily living. Support from our staff in a residential program can mean help with housework, meal prep, personal care & planning. AHCL staff also provide support in medical or health areas, finance, maintaining and developing relationships, employment goals, continuing education, faith based activities.
With an inclusive approach to Residential programs, AHCL encourages people supported and staff to become involved in their own communities. People we support often attend community events like hockey games, special meals, concerts, festivals and join clubs they are interested in. Person centered planning that is done with the person and the people who know and care for them of their choosing, allows staff to discover what is interesting and important to that person and plan to make those things happen within their own community whenever possible.
Supported Independent Living:
The Supported Independent Living program currently supports 25 individuals living in their own homes or apartments in all communities of our area. SIL is one of the largest programs that AHCL offers. Supported Independent Living is the best of both worlds and a program we are proud to be able to offer. Families and people supported embrace this option as a way to ensure loved ones have enough support and assistance to be safe, healthy and happy while living independently and setting them up for success.
There are two options for people in the SIL program –live independently in the community and get support from SIL staff or for 4 people in Powassan, there is an option for people to live in a 4plex building, with independent apartments and staff on site to provide support.
The SIL program and staff are designed to allow for supports in a respectful and efficient way for people who are able to live independently. Staff can provide support in areas like medical appointments, community connecting activities, employment supports, heath & wellness commitments and emotional support for people as well. Often, staff are able to provide coaching and opportunities for skill building and moving further towards independence however this is done with careful consideration for the persons health & safety.
AHCL has SIL North which covers the people supported who live at King St and in the town of Powassan. SIL South offers support to people living independently as well as a home that is rented to people supported which is totally wheelchair accessible.
